"Well, I'm having a good ole time up here, and I'm glad I decided to join Mom & Dad. The list of possible activities I made up in advance has paid off. Today we went to the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum (better than the Luxor), and we will also be going to Angel Island later in the week.

On Sunday there was a 10k which Astrid had signed up for. It was full,  capped at 14,000 runners. I did run anyhow (details forthcoming in person). It's called the Wharf to Wharf: from Santa Cruz to Capitola. In Santa Cruz, it begins at a sort of carnival?, maybe something like Coney Island used to be, and then it winds its way along the houses, with much of the shore is visible during the run. During the run, there are bands, more than a dozen for sure, that play, everything from bongos to a brass band and even Japanese taiko drums! The residents also come out to cheer the runners along. It's very cool!

Yesterday, Bob had purchased tickets to the Bank of the West Classic, a tennis tournament held at Stanford. It was my first time watching pros play, and it was fun, even though I usually find tennis rather boring to watch. We got to see Lindsey Davenport warm up.

I'll attach some pics. The one called "Astrid running" is there mostly for you to see the "people crossing sign" - kind of funny. If you do want to find us, Astrid is left of middle, w/ a light greenish cap on, about in the middle; I'm to the left, mostly eclipsed by a lady w/ a pink visor on.   July, 2001

Tomorrow, Angel Island. Been looking forward to that one. We're taking obento (the Japanese equivalent of brown bagging it) which sort of feels nostalgic; having Mom's 'rice balls' simply makes me happy. Astrid and I kind of stir fried tonight, totally lacking the ole Mom touch. But no one got sick, and we're full.  July, 2001
